This past weekend, the Lakeland District debate team competed in the New York State Debate Coaches Association State debate tournament that was held at Horace Mann High School. The weather forced us into one day of competition, but the tournament ran and the team succeeded.
James Allen (L) & Akshay Ramaswamy (L) finished as the Junior Varsity State Champions.
James Allen was the 3rd best individual JV speaker in the state and Akshay Ramaswamy was the 6th best.
In varsity debate, Mihir Paradkar (L) debated by himself due to Priten’s illness and finished with a winning record as the 5th place quarter finalist. He was also the 5th best individual speaker in the state.
In novice debate, Humza Tahir (L) and Jatin Barwhani (L) finished as quaterifinalists with a 3-1 record. Humza was the tournament’s 8th best novice speaker and Jatin was the 10th best speaker.
Temma Pelletier (P) was 12th out of 64 individual contestants.
Students from the team qualified to the tournament based on their success during the year and all of the students on the team finished with 2-2 records. Congratulations to Ethan Krantz (P), Matthew Corrado (P), Michael Lewis (L), Wylie Tornquist (P), Temma Pelletier (P), Evan D’Amaso (L), Dylan Black (L) for finishing 2-2.
Our preparations for the tournament were also slowed down a bit by the weather, but we were able take advantage of Google Hangout to prepare!
