Retiring Solon High School speech and debate coach says he’ll miss watching students grow

SOLON, Ohio — Dan Ceci, who has built Solon High School’s speech and debate program into one of the largest and most consistently successful ones in Ohio, says his decision to step down as the team’s head coach and adviser was bittersweet.

“We’ve gotten to watch this program really grow and develop from when we had about 10 kids in it to one that consistently has about 100 students in it,” Ceci said.

“Competitively, the team certainly has flourished and gone on to be very successful, both in the state and nationally. But more importantly, I think the skills that the kids have learned and developed are lifelong skills that they’ll need for all of their careers.

“I’ve enjoyed being a part of that and watching the students grow, and so I’ll certainly miss that.”
