Tutoring Support

Millennial Speech & Debate is pleased to announce that we are now offering tutoring support for both individual debaters and speech and debate teams across the country through our millennialsd.slack.com app.

 

Basic Subscription Options

– Automated, daily topic-related updates and thoughts pushed directly to any device you have with the Slack app.

– Semi-Private Topic discussion forums

– Weekend tournament updates — Politics, topic-specific

Available to all Institution Subscribers ($219) and Individual Student Pro accounts ($99)

 

Individual Tutoring Options

(a) Individual per hour tutoring — $100/hour.  This flexible package is available to any Debate program or Individual Student who purchases a relevant Institution Subscription or a Student Pro package.  The package is designed to meet the individual student needs.  A minimum yearly commitment of 5 hours is required. Percentages discounts are available for packages about 5 hours.

(b) Tutoring services include — argument and argument refutation support, case review, general topic and skill discussion, and viewing practice debates and speeches through Slack video conferencing services.

 

Institution Based Tutoring Options

(a) Team-based tutoring at the discretion of the coach.

– Five hours of team or individual based tutoring is included with our packages valued at $399 or more.

– Schools or other private institutions that purchase Institution packages valued at $599 or more can purchase additional hours of tutoring at a discounted rate of $65/hour.

(b)Public Forum Topic preparation packages.  Schools or institutions can purchase Public Forum topic preparation packages for $750/month .

 

Public Forum Topic Preparation Package — $995

(a) Private, interactive topic lecture

(b) Draft Public Forum cases and student case review

(c) Argument development support

(d) Case review

(e) Practice speech and practice debate review

This will provide up to 15 hours of directed instruction for a single month on a particular topic.

 

Policy Debate Preparation Package — $995

(a) Case development support

(b) Support for answering all off-case arguments and related case arguments

(c) Practice debate & speech watching and feedback

(d) Private argument discussion forums.

This will provide up to 15 hours of directed instruction over the course of the season.  Students may participate as individuals or as groups.

 

Lincoln-Douglas Topic Preparation Package — $995

Instructors — US College Debate Directors

Dave Arnett.  Dave Arnett is the Director of Debate at the University of Kentucky. Before arriving at Kentucky, Dave was the Director of Debate at the University of California at Berkeley for twelve years. On 14 occasions, his teams have been ranked in the top 16 (US), including 10 top five teams, and 3 overall number one rankings. His teams have won almost every major college tournament in the US including Dartmouth, Harvard, Northwestern, and Wake Forest. He has coached a national championship team as well as two runner-ups. Dave was selected the National Coach of the Year on two separate occasions (2009, 2015). This year, Dave has had two separate teams ranked in the top 16 of the national debate coaches poll. He has over twenty years of experience teaching high school students.

 

Dave will be tutoring in Policy Debate and Public Forum.

 

Brian Manuel. Brian Manuel is the Director of Policy Debate at Stanford University and the Director of Debate at Edgemont High School. While the Director of Policy Debate at Stanford, Brian has rebuilt the program and most recently qualified their first team to the National Debate Tournament in 20 years, clearing to elims, and finishing ranked 22nd in the country. Prior to Stanford, Brian coached for Harvard University, where his teams were greatly successful achieving multiple First Round At-Large bids to the National Debate Tournament and participating in elimination rounds at every tournament they attended. At Stanford, Brian has coached teams to the elimination rounds of the National Debate Tournament, Cross-Examination Debate Association National Championship along with the University of Missouri-Kansas City, University of Nevada Las Vegas, Arizona State, Gonzaga, and San Francisco State University.

 

On the high school circuit, Brian has coached the champions of the 2003 Bronx Science, 2008 Barkley Forum, 2011 Meadows & USC tournaments, and the 2012 Golden Desert Invitational. In addition, Brian has had multiple teams in the elimination rounds of the Tournament of Champions, NDCA, NCFL, and NSDA Nationals with finals finishes in 2007 and 2012, in addition to coaching the top speaker at NSDA Nationals in 2013.

 

In 2015, Brian began coaching debate at Edgemont high school.  In his first year, Brian coached one Policy team to the TOC, with the team earning 6 TOC bids and reaching the quarterfinals at Harvard. One of the debaters was accepted to Harvard and the other to Stanford. In only his second year at Edgement (2016-17), he has grown the team to more than 50 debaters.

 

Brian will be tutoring in Policy, PD, and Lincoln-Douglas.

 

Instructors — Millennial Debate

Stefan Bauschard. A debate coach for the Harvard Debate Council for many years, and currently the Debate Coach for Lakeland School District, Stefan has been actively teaching speaking and debating in the United States at both the high school and college levels since 1994. During that time, he has taught hundreds of students, developed and tabulated more than seventy-five tournaments, spent thousands of hours developing research and instructional materials for debaters all over the country, and has developed academic speech and debate workshops in the United States and abroad.

Stefan is available for Public Forum coaching.

 

Instructors — High School Debate Coaches

Bilal Butt.   Bilal is currently Assistant Director and the Public Forum Debate coach at Ardrey Kell High School. This year (2016-17), his teams closed out Yale and reached finals of Wake Forest and semifinals of the New York City and Glenbrooks Invitational. In 2015-16, his team received seven bids and reached the octafinals of the Tournament of Champions The were the runner-up at the Blake tournament and the Blake Round Robin and reached the octafinals of the Harvard tournament while also “championing” the Laird Lewis Invitational.

Bilal is available for Public Forum coaching.
Kevin Hamrick.  Kevin Hamrick is the Director of Debate at Montgomery Bell Academy.  This year his teams have dominated the national policy circuit, winning St. Mark’s, New Trier, and the Glenbrooks. His teams have also advanced to the elimination rounds at every other major tournament. Prior to coaching at Montgomery Bell, Kevin coached at Northwestern, where he assisted with coaching multiple national champions.

Kevin be tutoring in Policy Debate.

 

Instructors — College Assistant Debate Coaches
Dr. Mikaeala Malsin.  Dr. Mikaela Malsin is currently the Associate Director of Debate at Emory University, her alma mater.At Emory Mikaela has coached multiple first round at large bids to the National Debate Tournament, and one team who placed third in the Copeland award rankings. In 2012, she received an M.A. in Communications from Wake Forest University, where she coached teams receiving first round bids and clearing at the National Debate Tournament. She completed her Ph.D. in Communication Studies at the University of Georgia, where she coached from 2012 to 2015. Mikaela has taught debate at the Emory National Debate Institute, the Dartmouth Debate Institute, the Georgia Debate Institute, and the Dallas Urban Debate Alliance summer institute.

Mikaela will be tutoring in Policy Debate and Public Forum.
